Judging Hints and Tips

The judge will be looking for Originality, Workmanship and Presentation.

Design something yourself using pictures from magazines or your own photographs .

The internet can be used to see what others produce and give you inspiration.

The library has craft books that include patterns.

Be sure to read instructions carefully to avoid costly mistakes especially when cutting out fabric pieces.

Use the best materials you can.

If you are "recycling" fabric ensure that it is still fit for purpose not frayed etc. It would be terrible to spend time on a project to find the fabric pulls away or is worn out.

Needlework projects are time consuming and short cuts should be avoided if the finished article is compromised.

Neat work with pleasing colours and proportions is required.

Work made for others can be loaned back for exhibiting

When working on denim use size 90/100 sewing machine needles. Wear a thimble if you are hand stitching on thick fabric.

Ensure that your finished work is ironed and perhaps carried to the show in a box to preserve its best appearance.

Frames and mounts need careful consideration to show off your work.

Make a cardboard stand, use a box or other equipment to display jewellery.

Items that have won in a previous Westbury-on-Trym Flower Show must not be entered.

Entries must not show the name of the competitor.
